I drove by this sign off of Fairfax the other day. I wish I hadn’t seen it. Me and my ex just broke up. Eternal Sunshine was our first date over five years ago. I had been keeping busy enough to ignore all that terrible shit that lingers after the relationship is completely over. And then this one fucking sign crept in through the corner of my eye.

I spent the next few blocks wrestling with the urge to call his deleted number, hating myself for even entertaining that debate, as I coasted through yellow lights. Would he be up for one more midnight tryst? Or was he still smarter than me? I got my phone from my purse and held it with sweaty fingers as I thought about what he and I were in the end: hung-over in a bright-ass bowling alley, unable to look one another in the eye, and void of enough money to buy enough alcohol to make the situation digestable. De- facto: he and I had become the bitter afterbirth of what I thought my future was. All things considered, fuck him. Made my mascara run.
